Project: Building Schools for Future programme, Hull

A total of 968 Leaderflush Shapland doorsets have been supplied to three schools in Hull City Council’s £400 million Building Schools for Future (BSF) programme. The programme aims to transform learning across Hull whilst embracing and enhancing the needs of the individual learner, local communities and the city's social and economic infrastructure.

Doorsets from Leaderflush Shapland’s Designer and Extended Performance ranges were specified by the Sewell group for Tweendykes Special School, Archbishop Sentamu Academy and Winifred & Holtby Schools. They were finished in Crown Cut Steamed Beech veneer and Oceana Hygieniform high impact PVC. These finishes will help to raise the standards of hygiene by controlling the spread of infections through a highly effective anti-microbial additive - Hygienilac - which kills harmful species of bacteria and is incorporated within the lacquer on all Leaderflush Shapland veneered doorsets. Hygienilac is also incorporated throughout the complete 2mm thickness of Hygieniform whose durability and robust qualities make it suitable for ‘severe duty’ applications.

Performance characteristics included up to 30 minutes fire resistance and up to 32RwdB sound reduction. EnduraCor, Leaderflush Shapland’s engineered performance doorset core was used throughout; independent testing showed it to be 100 times more durable than multi-layered chipboard cores. EnduraCor’s durability and strength is especially suited to harsh environments such as schools and could significantly reduce ‘whole life’ repair and maintenance costs.

Doors and doorsets in schools and colleges have many unique requirements which can appear daunting for specifiers unless they have the appropriate guidance. Leaderflush Shapland has a wealth of relevant knowledge and experience and can provide cost effective, rationalised doorset solutions that consider the latest guidance set out by the Department for Children, Schools and Families, whilst satisfying a wide range of technical performance requirements such as fire resistance, smoke control, sound reduction and hygiene.

Over the last 12 months, Leaderflush Shapland has manufactured 9440 doorsets for education projects alone including Ravensbourne and Bideford colleges - both 2011 RIBA awards winners – and Hull and Derby Building Schools for the Future programmes.
