Project: British Film Institute, Southbank. London

Door manufacturer Holloway Doors in East London were asked to provide a flush double door-set to be faced in a black gloss high pressure laminate (HPL) for the British Film Institute (BFI) on the Southbank in London. These internal doors were to be used for the entrance into an area known as the „Delegates Lounge“ at the BFI – a specific area for selective audiences. This separate, individual and slightly exclusive part of the building is partitioned from the corridor by a 6 mm laminated glass wall.

A door frame around the door would have disturbed the aesthetic of the glass partition, so standard hinges were not used. Without a frame and without any hinges to support these oversize doors, 180 degree GEZE floor springs were required allowing the doors to open fully both ways. It was therefore imperative that these 2700 mm high double doors were of the highest quality, lightweight and of the greatest stability.

The Moralt Laminesse FireSmoke MDF door blank was chosen due to the product‘s unique lighter weight but enormously stable Spruce laminated core. This engineered core consisting of 4 mm thick rotary peeled veneers was the perfect solution for the not inconsiderable requirements of this project. It is the Moralt engineered core that guarantees a strong and stable door blank, with a resultant smooth surface upon which the black gloss HPL could be perfectly and reliably applied.
