Foundations

The Building Centre was founded in 1931, born out of a building materials bureau at the Architectural Association. It opened its doors to the public at 158 New Bond Street where it provided material and product information to the industry and public, and held major exhibitions. The Building Centre received the support of an array of prominent architects including Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and Sir Edwin Lutyens who both sat on the centre's first advisory board.

After the blitz destroyed the premises in 1941 the Building Centre moved to 9 Conduit Street and then to 26 Store Street in 1951, where to this day it serves the industry and all those interested in the built environment.

The Building Centre is owned by the Built Environment Trust, an independent charitable organisation that provides support for educational, research and cultural activities.
